Baseball Takes Series at Brown with Pair of Sunday Victories

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Cornell baseball team claimed the series against Brown with a pair of victories Sunday at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium, completing a 2-1, 13-inning victory in the resumption of Saturday's suspended nightcap before posting an 8-3 victory over the Bears in the series finale behind a balanced 14-hit attack.

COMPLETION OF SATURDAY'S SUSPENDED GAME RECAP
Senior shortstop TJ Swidorski delivered a two-out, go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 13th inning as Cornell completed a 2-1 victory in the resumption of Saturday's suspended nightcap, which had been halted after 12 innings tied at 1-1 due to darkness.

Senior center fielder Caden Wildman had a one-out RBI single to ignite the Big Red rally before advancing to second on a fielding error that put junior infielder Luke Johnson aboard. After Wildman stole third, Swidorski delivered his go-ahead RBI single to put Cornell up 2-1.

Cornell's scheduled Sunday starter, senior right-hander Ethan Hamill, entered in relief for the bottom of the 13th and erased a one-out walk with a game-ending double play to seal the win.

Freshman right-hander Ross Yoshida earned the victory after pitching a season-high seven innings on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Hamill recorded his second career save, his first since a four-inning relief outing at Georgia Tech on Feb. 25, 2024.

Brown's Matt Wilmarth took the loss after allowing an unearned run on two hits and striking out one in the 13th.

RUBBER MATCH RECAP
Six Cornell players had two hits apiece, pacing the Big Red's 14-hit attack as it claimed the rubber match of the weekend three-game series 8-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore catcher Mason Barela, senior center fielder Caden Wildman, junior second baseman Luke Johnson, freshman right fielder Jake Hower, senior shortstop TJ Swidorski and sophomore outfielder Tyler Beaulieu each had two hits. Hower was the lone player for the Big Red (10-24, 7-11 Ivy League) with multiple RBI.

Senior right-hander Ethan Hamill earned the start after picking up the save in the suspended game. Hamill posted his first victory since May 5, 2024, also against Brown, after allowing three runs on four hits over five innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Michael Tight recorded his first collegiate save, closing out the game with four scoreless innings, yielding three hits, issuing two walks and fanning three.

Cornell and Brown (19-16, 11-6 Ivy League) traded three-run thirds as a two-out, two-run single by Jake Hower and an RBI single by Swidorski put the Big Red ahead 3-0. Brown's Mika Petersen countered with a three-run home run following a leadoff single by Jack Edmunds and a double down the left-field line by Matt Luigs.

Johnson gave Cornell a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single after Wildman led off the inning by reaching safely on a Brown fielding error before junior designated hitter Owen Carlson drew a nine-pitch walk.

In his second inning of work, Tight prevented Brown from tying the game after a two-out walk drawn by Luigs and an infield single by Petersen put the tying run in scoring position, getting Alex Benevento to chase an off-speed pitch in the dirt to end the threat.

Cornell pulled away with four unanswered runs over the final two innings. Swidorski and Beaulieu opened the eighth with consecutive singles — the second on a bunt — before sophomore first baseman Jayden Shin reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt that allowed Swidorski to score from second. A groundout by freshman third baseman Aiden Barclay plated Beaulieu and sophomore catcher Mason Barela added an RBI single to make it 7-3. Shin then added an insurance run in the ninth with a two-out RBI single to center that scored Hower.

GAME NOTES
• With its pair of victories, Cornell trimmed Brown's lead in the all-time series to 75-67-2. The Big Red have won five of the last seven in the series and won consecutive series against the Bears for the first time since sweeping doubleheaders in 2012, 2013, and 2014 – the latter six games of a seven-game win streak over Brown.

• Cornell has won each of its last four games that have gone at least 13 innings, joining triumphs over Princeton (4-2 in 14 innings on May 5, 2002; 4-2 in 14 innings on April 27, 2014) and Delaware State (7-4 in 14 innings on March 21, 2003).

• Behind his go-ahead RBI single in the resumption of Saturday's suspended game and his RBI single in the third, Swidorski extended his on-base streak to a career-high-tying 11 games. He previously reached safely in 11 consecutive games across his freshman and sophomore campaigns (May 6, 2023, and March 30, 2024). Swidorski also has hits in each of his last five games, matching his season and career high previously set between March 29 and April 4.

• Swidorski has driven in at least one run in each of his last four games and in eight of his last nine (10 RBI), increasing his team-leading RBI total to 24.

• Beaulieu extended his career-high on-base streak to eight games after having a base hit in both contests.

• Over his last three appearances, Tight has now thrown 8 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just four hits, issuing two walks and having nine strikeouts while posting a 0.69 WHIP.

• Cornell has played five consecutive errorless games for the first time in at least the last 40-plus seasons, a stretch spanning 39 1/3 innings.

LOOKING ON DECK
Cornell returns home Tuesday, April 28, to open a four-game homestand against Bucknell (21-21, 14-8 Patriot League) at Booth Field.
