NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Cornell sailing team sits in contention after day one of the ICSA Women's Team Racing National Championship on Lake Pontchartrain, posting a 5-4 record to stand eighth in a tightly packed leaderboard. The Big Red is just one win out of fourth place, with five teams clustered within striking distance entering Monday's decisive racing at Southern Yacht Club, hosted by Tulane University.
Cornell earned key victories over MIT, Charleston, Georgetown, Roger Williams and St. Mary's (Md.), while dropping close contests to unbeaten leaders Stanford and Yale, along with Brown and Dartmouth. Led by the rotation of Sophia Devling, Gilda Dondona and Winborne Majette with crews Sophia Mulvania, Paulina Freyre and Maya Conway, the Big Red will look to capitalize on a favorable day-two slate, with four of its final five races coming against teams currently below them in the standings.
At the Admiral's Cup in Kings Point, Cornell finished 10th in a 14-team field with 251 points, navigating shifty, light air on Saturday and a steadier northeast breeze on Sunday. The A Division crew of Adrianna D'Agati and Kate Constan placed 10th, while the B Division rotation of Matthew Schmitt, Leopold Faerber, Maeve Katics and Emil Damji finished ninth.
