NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Cornell sailing team climbed into the top half of the standings with a strong push on day two of the ICSA Women's Team Racing National Championship, finishing seventh overall with an 8-6 record on Lake Pontchartrain. Cornell's record actually tied with three other teams for fifth, but fell to seventh in the tiebreakers and finished short of qualifying for the six-team second round.
After opening the regatta at 5-4 and within striking distance after day one, the Big Red capitalized on a favorable Monday slate to secure wins over Tulane, Tufts, Michigan and Bowdoin, finishing just behind a tightly packed middle group in one of the nation's premier events.
Led by the skipper rotation of Sophia Devling, Gilda Dondona, Ava Gustafson and Winborne Majette, alongside crews Sophia Mulvania, Paulina Freyre, Grace Penque and Maya Conway, Cornell showed resilience throughout the two-day championship. The Big Red's only setbacks came against top-tier programs that all advanced into the top six.
The Big Red will close out the 2025-26 season when it competes at the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championship from May 15-22 in Tampa, Fla.
