ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior second baseman
TJ Swidorski went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI as the Cornell baseball team scored six unanswered runs in the first three innings to roll past Dartmouth 8-1 Friday afternoon at Booth Field in the opening game of a three-game Ivy League series.
All nine starters recorded a hit as the Big Red (5-16, 3-4 Ivy League) totaled 14 hits on the afternoon. Freshman first baseman
Jayden Shin capped a four-run second inning with his first collegiate home run.
Junior left-handed pitcher
Huxley Holcombe turned in his second straight quality start, limiting Dartmouth (5-14, 2-5 Ivy League) to one run on four hits over six innings with four strikeouts. Freshman right-hander
Ross Yoshida closed it out, striking out three in three scoreless innings for the first save of his collegiate career.
Cornell jumped on Dartmouth starter Marco Dumsky early, scoring a run in the first on a baserunning play before adding five more in the second and third to take a 6-0 lead. Dumsky was chased in the third after having allowed seven hits and six runs. Sophomore left fielder
Tyler Beaulieu contributed an RBI single in the second and Swidorski's RBI single in the third capped the early burst.
Alejandro Puig trimmed the deficit to 6-1 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but Swidorski answered with a two-run double to the right-center field gap to put the game away. Trey Sejnoha limited the damage the rest of the way, allowing two runs across 5 2/3 innings of relief.
Henry Murray, who had three of Dartmouth's six hits, accounted for two of the three hits allowed by Holcombe and Yoshida over the final four innings, singling in the sixth and ninth innings.
GAME NOTES
• Cornell posted its fourth consecutive home win over Dartmouth, marking the program's longest home win streak over the Big Green since claiming seven straight home games at Hoy Field between May 7, 1983, and April 1, 1994.
• The Big Red trimmed Dartmouth's lead in the all-time series to 104-90-1, as the victory marked the eighth consecutive win by the home team in the series.
• After recording his second consecutive quality start, Holcombe has a 1-2 record with a 2.96 ERA (24.1IP, 8ER) and 0.99 WHIP (13H, 11BB) over his last five games, while holding opponents to a .163 batting average over 80AB. Four of Holcombe's last five outings have featured the junior southpaw allowing one run or fewer.
• Swidorski's two doubles matched his single-game high, equaling outputs against No. 5 Wake Forest (March 5, 2023) and Georgetown (March 10, 2024). It was the second time this season a Big Red player had multiple two-base hits, joining senior center fielder
Caden Wildman at Richmond on Feb. 28.
• Hager stole multiple bases for the first time in his collegiate career.
• Junior designated hitter
Owen Carlson also upped his hit streak to five games, slashing .467/.619/.533 (7-for-15) with 5R, 1 double, 5BB and 1HP during the stretch.
