Considerable dedication and drive are required to compete for the BIG RED. We are excited that you have joined this athletics community and all of us are dedicated to supporting an environment that will facilitate a positive experience.

As a student-athlete, you are positioned to become a leader on campus and a role model for others within our campus community. Your participation in intercollegiate athletics increases your visibility and the responsibility you hold to represent yourself, your team, our department and Cornell University in an appropriate manner at all times. Your challenge is to strike a balance between the serious pursuit of academic depth in your chosen field, and the intensity of training and competing for the Big Red. The Ivy league principles that describe participation in varsity sports as a voluntary commitment diminish neither the intensity of your involvement, nor the heights which you may reach within the Ivy League or on the national stage. As demonstrated by Big Red NCAA, World, and Olympic Champions who have come before you, there are no limits to what you can achieve!

Being a true member of your team is earned through diligent effort and productivity in practice and competition. You are expected to be a supportive and unselfish teammate and to hold one another accountable to high personal, academic, and athletic standards. The coaches and staff will support and guide you through your transition to becoming a Division I student-athlete. Please know that they have the best interests of both the team and you as an individual in the decisions they make. Embrace coaching in the way it is intended - to provide you an opportunity to improve your capabilities and to prepare you for challenging competition and challenging situations in sport and in life.

Please read and absorb the messages communicated in this Handbook. It is an important resource, a simple and an accurate reference for answers to frequently asked questions, and it is your personal guide to many of our department policies.

Congratulations on your decision to attend Cornell and contribute to the Big Red Athletics program. You have joined a dynamic community focused on our vision to equip and inspire healthy citizen leaders' mission to inspire transformation through winning, wellness, spirit, and which enhances the overall environment on campus while it profoundly impacts your undergraduate experience. Lifelong friendships will be forged, and valuable life-lessons will enhance your education.
