Princeton Holds Off Men's Soccer For 2-1 Win

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Princeton Tigers held off a late surge from the men's soccer team on Saturday night to win the Ancient Eight matchup at Berman Field, 2-1.

The first 45 minutes of play didn't result in dangerous chances for either team, with the first shot on goal not coming until the 38th minute when Benjamin Issroff got his head on a ball that freshman goalkeeper Ryan Shellow was able to control.

Princeton (7-7-1, 1-3-1 Ivy League) was able to put one in less than five minutes into the half when Patrick Barba sent a long ball down the left flank and Greg Seifert got behind the defender and just got his shot past a diving Shellow for the 1-0 lead.

Seifert added another goal 10 minutes later when Bryan Prudil switched the field with a long cross that Seifert was able to one-time from just inside the box and into the goal.

The teams kept battling, and Cornell (1-12-2, 0-5-0 Ivy League) began to gain some momentum and create chances going forward. Cornell outshot Princeton 8-5 in the second half and earned four corner kicks with gritty play towards the end line.

Despite being down 2-0 with under 15 minutes to go in the game, the Big Red did not back down and began to open up the field of play and attack. Cornell was finally rewarded in the 79th minute when Duff Bedrosian jumped on a loose ball 30 yards out on the right wing, took a few touches and then rifled an on-the-run shot into the top left corner of the net.

The Big Red kept looking for the equalizer and nearly had it in the 85th minute when senior Allen Michael Capo got his head on a corner kick from Madison Heck, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out for a goal kick.

Shellow finished the game with four saves and his counterpart Jacob Schachner finished with one.

Princeton outshot Cornell 6-2 and the teams each earned five corner kicks.

Cornell returns to Berman Field on Saturday, Nov. 5 to take on Dartmouth in what will serve as the Class of 2017 Senior Game.
