ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore quarterback Jeff Mathews turned some heads when he was named National Offensive Player of the Week by The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS National Players of Week. His second straight appearance cements his reputation as one of the nation's top quarterbacks.
For the second consecutive week, Mathews was honored as The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS National Player of the Week after a dominant performance in a 48-38 victory at reigning Ivy League champion Penn. Mathews completed 35-of-45 passes for a school and Ivy record 548 yards to go along with five touchdowns in the victory over the Quakers. Along with his Ivy record for passing yardage, he also broke Cornell and Ivy League season passing yardage records (3,412) and Cornell total offense marks (3,274). His 25 touchdowns tied a school record, while his completion percentage (.679) and pass efficiency marks (162.26) also are new Cornel lstandards.
After throwing for 521 yards and five touchdowns last weekend against Columbia, he went one better against the team ranked No. 1 against the pass in the Ancient Eight. Three of his receivers surpassed 100 yards and three of his touchdowns went to Shane Savage, who closed the season with school records for receiving yards (1,080) and receiving touchdowns (12).
