ITHACA, N.Y. -- It had been so long, no one knew exactly what happened when Cornell's scoreboard hit three digits. So when Shonn Miller hit a 15-foot jumper with 1:26 left in the game, everyone in attendance found out it would go to three numbers.

The Big Red hit the century mark for just the 19th time in program history and the second time in the past 20 years in a 103-84 victory over Division III Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena. The win improved the Big Red to 8-9, while the Panthers fell to 10-3.

Senior Johnathan Gray scored 24 points, 19 in the first half, and connected on six 3-pointers to go along with his seven rebounds to lead five double figure scorers. Cornell shot .631 for the game, the eighth-highest mark in school history, shot .591 from 3-point range (13-of-22) for 12th, connected on 13 treys (11th best) and dished off 25 assists (third-highest) in posting its most points in a regulation game since scoring 108 at Harvard in a 1993 contest.

Errick Peck scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished off three assists and blocked two shots off the bench, while Nolan Cressler knocked down 6-of-7 field goals, including all three 3-pointers, en route to 15. Devin Cherry scored 14 and Galal Cancer had 10 to round out thye double figure scorers. The Big Red's frontcourt of Shonn Miller (six points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals) and Eitan Chemerinski (nine points, seven reb ounds, two assists, three steals) also had a great effect on the game.

But it wasn't before some tense moments against a high-scoring foe.

Old Westbury, who entered the game scoring 86 points per game, did just about everything right for the first 28 minutes. The Panthers took a seven-point lead in each half, the last at 57-50 just two and a half minutes into the second half, and seemed to make every shot they put up. But Cornell methodically got back in it, and once the visitors missed a couple of shots, the Big Red pounced.

Trailing by one (63-62) with 12:10 left, Cornell took over. The Big Red went on a 22-1 run over the span of just 3:14 and a nailbiter turned into a comfortable margin for the home team. During the run, Old Westbury was 0-for-5 with three turnovers on their end, while Cornell made 10 consecutive shots, including three by Cherry. From there, it was all but over. The Big Red never led the lead slip back below 14 and hit the 100-point mark with time to spare.

As Cornell was on the way to scoring 57 second half points, the Panthers did all they could to make sure the Big Red needed to. The visitors came into the contest with plenty of confidence and hit 58 percent of its shots from the floor in the first 20 minutes, including a red-hot 60 percent from 3-point range (9-of-15). When Omari Trebuse hit a tough trey as the first half expired to give Old Westbury the 47-46 halftime lead, the Panthers had announced themselves as squarely in the game.

But while the Panthers needed to shoot the lights out to take the lead, Cornell methodically weathered the storm and answered every time it was challenged.

The Big Red rode a hot first half by Gray to answer Old Westbury's offensive performance. The senior scored 19 points, including hitting five 3-pointers in his 17 minutes of action. He was able to outscore Panthers' leading scorer Kerel Mitchell, who netted 15 before the break. Mitchell ended the day with 22 points and three steals to lead five double figure scorers for Old Westbury. Tyrik Tucker chipped in 15 points and five rebounds, Trebuse scored 14 with six assists and both Darnell Chavis and Rashawn McCarthy each had 10.

Cornell will open Ivy League play when it plays host to Columbia on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. in a game that will be televised on NBC Sports Network.
