ITHACA, N.Y.—After losing the first set, the Big Red volleyball team bounced back to defeat Brown, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in Newman Arena. Cornell improved to 7-11 overall and 6-2 in Ivy play, while the Bears moved to 11-8 and 3-5 against the Ancient Eight. Senior Emily Borman led the Big Red with 15 kills, while hitting .538.
Cornell and Brown were tied at 10 all early in the first set, but Brown pulled away to a 25-18 win. The Big Red held a slight lead throughout the second set and continued on to a 25-21 victory to tie the match at a set apiece. Junior Juliana Rogers had five kills, and senior captain Hilary Holland totaled 12 assists and seven digs. Junior libero Megan Mushovic notched two aces and eight digs.
The two teams traded the lead back and forth in the third set, and Brown was playing for match point with a 24-23 advantage. Borman made a huge kill to the tie the set, and a Bears' attacking error gave Cornell the go-ahead point. Brown's Lyndse Yess made a kill to tie the set yet again, but a big kill from Rogers and a Brown ball handling error sealed the win. Freshman Meagan Tatum notched five kills while hitting .444.
Once again Cornell and Brown traded the lead back and fourth in the fourth set, but at the midway point the Big Red edged ahead and continued on to a 25-23 match-winning set. Borman hit .715 with five kills, and Mushovic recorded seven digs.
Tatum joined Borman in leading the Big Red offense with 13 total kills, and Rogers added 11. Senior Kathryn Woodbury totaled seven kills of her own and added four block assists. Freshman Kelly Hansen led Cornell at the net with five blocks, and Mushovic totaled a match-high 23 digs. Holland recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 46 assists and 16 digs.
Brown was led by Megan Toman with 17 kills, while Brianna Williamson and Yess added 15 and 14, respectively. Natalie Myers recorded a match-high 54 assists, and Yess led the Bears' defensively with 16 digs.
The Big Red will be back in action on Tuesday, for its last non-conference match of the season. Cornell will play host to Binghamton for a 7 p.m. match in Newman Arena.
