ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's soccer team had a 2-1 lead in the second half, but Penn rallied for two goals to take a 3-2 victory over the Big Red in the Ivy League opener for both teams at Berman Field in Ithaca. The loss sends the Big Red to 1-7 on the year and 0-1 in the Ivy League, while Penn is now 7-0-3 overall and 1-0 in Ancient Eight action.
Scott Caldwell and
Pedro Pereira scored for the Big Red, with Caldwell's strike coming in the first half to tie the score at one. Pereira's tally came early in the second half, giving the Big Red a 2-1 lead before Penn would rally for two goals to steal the win.
The Quakers got on the board first as Jason Gorskie headed home an Alex Grendi corner kick at the far post in the 20th minute. The Big Red equalized 17 minutes later as
Dan McKallagat played a through-ball to Caldwell, who slotted the ball down to the far post to knot the game at one heading into the half.
Pereira scored his first career goal 11 minutes after the break, taking a pass from
Jimmy Lannon on the right flank, cutting to the inside and ripping a left-footed shot from 25 yards to the top corner of the far post.
Penn tied the score in the 71st minute as Omid Shokoufandeh popped a loose ball into the back of the net after taking a feed from Christian Barreiro. Shokoufandeh then struck for the game-winner nine minutes later, again popping in a loose ball from six yards out.
Both Cornell goalkeeper
Scott Brody and Penn goalkeeper Drew Healy picked up three saves on the game, with the Quakers taking 15 shots to Cornell's 13.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Harvard for a 2 p.m. contest against the Crimson.
