ITHACA, N.Y.—The Big Red volleyball team continued its winning ways on Saturday afternoon grabbing a 3-2 victory at Columbia. Cornell completed its sweep of the Lions and is now 2-0 against the Ancient Eight. Junior Juliana Rogers led the Big Red with 16 kills, and junior Megan Mushovic tallied 25 digs.
Columbia (5-6, 0-2 Ivy) jumped out to a quick lead in the first set and continued to a 15-10 advantage. The Big Red fought back to tie the match at 21, but the Lions edged out Cornell to win 25-23. Sophomore Erin McCarthy led the Big Red with five kills.
In the second set the Big Red regrouped pulling out to a 15-8 advantage and never looked back. Cornell hit .233 as a team on its way to a 25-13 victory to tie the match at one. Rogers hit .500 for the set and notched seven kills in just 12 attempts. Mushovic tallied 10 digs, while McCarthy had eight. The Lions hit -0.02 in the set.
Cornell took a 10-5 lead in the third set and took that momentum to a 25-20 victory. The Big Red hit .400 as a team and was led by Rogers with six kills, while hitting .500.
The Lions came back in the fourth set to win 25-22 and tied the match at two sets apiece.
The Big Red and Columbia traded the lead back and forth in the fifth set and were tied at 15 points apiece. McCarthy and freshman Meagan Tatum recorded the last two kills to win the match. Tatum recorded four kills, while hitting .571, and senior Hilary Holland had seven digs.
McCarthy totaled 15 kills and added 14 digs for Cornell. Mushovic added three aces to her 25 digs. Freshman Kelly Hansen notched five blocks and seven kills. Holland had 46 assists with 14 digs and five kills. Kathryn Woodbury made eight kills and made four blocks.
Columbia was led by Amalia Viti with 31 kills while hitting .289. Ellie Thomas tallied 25 digs for the Lions, while Monique Roberts totaled six blocks.
The Big Red will play at Long Island on Sunday at 2 p.m.
