Robert Morris Comes from Behind to Defeat Volleyball in a 3-2 Heartbreaker

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Big Red volleyball team fell to Robert Morris in a 3-2 heartbreaker on Saturday morning in the first match of the Cornell Invitational. Cornell picked up wins in sets one and three, but the Colonials fought back to win the match in the fifth and deciding set. Junior Juliana Rogers led the Big Red offense with 14 kills, while freshman Kelly Hansen posted an impressive 11 blocks and Megan Mushovic had 38 digs.

RMU and Cornell battled back and forth for points in the first set and were tied at 17 all. The Big Red pulled ahead to win 25-19, securing its final point with a block by Erin McCarthy and Hansen. Rogers had four kills and Mushovic totaled 10 digs in the set.

The second match was close once again, and Cornell and the Colonials were tied at 21 late in the match. Robert Morris pulled out the last four points to win, 25-22.

The Big Red kept a small lead throughout most of the third set and went on to win 25-21 to go up two sets to one. Senior middle blocker Emily Borman tallied four kills on just five attempts, while Hansen made four blocks.

The fourth match was tied at 20 all, but RMU pulled ahead and sealed the win with three kills by Cassie Lee. McCarthy had five kills for the Big Red, while Mushovic totaled 11 digs. Hansen made three blocks at the net for Cornell.

In the fifth set, the two teams were tied at 10. Robert Morris capitalized on three Cornell errors and with two big blocks won a 15-11 set to earn the match victory. Mushovic added 10 more digs to total a season-high 38 for the match.

Borman joined Rogers in leading the Cornell offense with 12 kills while hitting.304. Holland recorded 49 assists with 15 digs and seven kills, while hitting .462. She also had four blocks. Kathryn Woodbury notched nine kills and seven block assists.

The Big Red will open its Ivy League play at 7 p.m. tonight taking on Columbia.
