BERKELY, Calif. -- Opening the 2008 season with a nationally ranked opponent proved too much for the Cornell men's soccer team to handle, as the Big Red dropped a 5-0 contest to the No. 11-ranked Golden Bears of California on Friday night in the opening game of the Cal Legacy Classic in Berkeley, Calif.
Cal (3-0-0) got on the board in the eighth minute as Pat Marion deflected a shot by teammate Imaan Kerchgani past Cornell goalkeeper
Luca Cerretani. The Golden Bears would make the score 2-0 in the 35th minute as Cal's Jacob Wilson banked in a shot off the goalpost to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
After the intermission, Cal's Paul Davis scored twice two and a half minutes apart to break the game open. Davis' first marker came in the 56th minute, then he struck for his second goal of the season in the 59th minute. A.J. Soares added the final tally for Cal in the 71st minute.
Cerretani made four stops in the losing effort for the Big Red. Cal goalkeeper Stefan Frei made four stops in 78 minutes, while David Bingham made one stop in the final 12 minutes for the Golden Bears.
