ITHACA, N.Y. -- Michael and
Patrick Kennedy both had a goal and an assist as the Cornell men's hockey team scored a 2-1 victory over Niagara on Saturday night at Lynah Rink.
Ben Scrivens stopped 25 shots as Cornell improved to 11-1-3 on the year, while Niagara dropped to 9-8-1 overall.
Michael Kennedy opened the scoring by taking a pass from his brother and rifling a shot past Niagara goaltender Juliano Pagliero from the slot with 26 seconds left on the first-period clock, with
Tyler Roeszler also garnering an assist on the play. Nearly seven minutes into the second period, it was
Patrick Kennedy finding the back of the net, as
Michael Kennedy kept the puck in the Niagara zone at the blue line, working it around the boards to
Joe Devin behind the goal. Devin fed the puck to a wide-open
Patrick Kennedy in front of the goal, who made a move on Pagliero to get him to commit low before slipping the puck around the outstretched right leg of the Purple Eagles' goaltender.
Niagara cut into the lead later in that period with 9:35 to play as Egor Mironov took a pass from Ryan Annesley on a rush and popped the puck into the right side of the Cornell goal past Scrivens. That would be the only blemish on the night for the Big Red, which wrapped up the remaining period and a half without incident.
Mironov's goal snapped a personal-best home shutout streak for Scrivens of 164:21, dating back to the Dec. 5 win over Clarkson, a 4-1 victory at Lynah Rink. In between, the junior netminder posted a pair of home shutouts to snap his previous mark of 163:03, set last season in a span that also included a shutout over Niagara.
The Big Red finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play, with
Patrick Kennedy's goal coming with the man advantage. Cornell also held Niagara scoreless in two power-play attempts. Both Scrivens and Pagliero finished the game with 25 saves.
Cornell, which concludes the non-league portion of the regular season with a 5-1-1 mark, returns to ECAC Hockey action for the remainder of the regular season. The Big Red's next game will be on Friday, Jan. 16, at Union in a special 7:30 start. Friday night's game will be televised on Time Warner Cable in the New York Capital District and in Central New York, while also being broadcast throughout the United States on the NHL Network.
