ITHACA, N.Y. -- A goal just over four minutes into the second half would be all the scoring of the match as the Cornell field hockey team dropped a 1-0 contest to Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field in Ithaca. Cornell falls to 8-3 on the year and 2-2 in the Ivy League with the loss, while Harvard improves to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in league action.
Senior goalkeeper
Melanie Jue made five saves in the loss for the Big Red, making a pair in the first half and three in the second. Harvard's goalkeeper, Cynthia Tassopoulos, made eight save in each half for the victory.
Catie De Stio had two solid scoring chances within a three-minute span late in the first half. The first came when
Kate Thompson sent a long pass behind the Crimson defense to find De Stio alone with Tassapoulos, who charged off her line to make the save. Cornell kept up the offensive pressure and with Harvard restarting from the sideline deep in its defensive territory, De Stio broke on the ball and intercepted it in the circle. After taking one quick step to her right, De Stio ripped a shot on goal, but once again Tassapoulos was on her game and made the save.
Following the break, the Crimson got on the scoreboard at the 39:13 mark of the match. Harvard earned a penalty corner and converted on the chance. The insertion from the penalty corner went to Carly Dickson, who made a pass to the far post, where Elizabeth Goodman-Bacon stood for the easy tip-in.
Goodman-Bacon's goal stood as the only marker of the match, as the Crimson kept the Big Red off the scoreboard. Cornell had three solid chances in a 10-minute span late in the second half, but Tassapoulos made the save each time.
Cornell is back in action next weekend as it welcomes Brown to Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
