ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the second straight afternoon, the Cornell women's hockey team put up a solid showing against top-ranked Mercyhurst, falling by a 4-1 score on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink.
Karlee Overguard scored her first goal of the season in the loss for the Big Red, which drops to 0-2 on the year.
Mercyhurst got goals from four different players, with both Jesse Scanzano and Bailey Bram picking up a goal and two assists on the day. Jess Jones and Ashley Cockell both added a goal for the Lakers (6-0).
The two teams skated to a scoreless first period, the second time this season that the Lakers were held off the scoreboard for the first 20 minutes. It took the Lakers just 2:48 of the second period to break that scoring drought as Cockell scored off a pass from Bram.
The Big Red fought back, though, holding even with the Lakers for the rest of the second period, heading into the intermission down only 1-0. Again, though, Mercyhurst came out flying off the faceoff to open the period, with Bram scoring just 22 seconds into the third period to make the score 2-0, taking a pass in stride from Scanzano and slipping the puck past Cornell goaltender
Amanda Mazzotta.
Jess Jones made the score 3-0 less than three minutes later, but Cornell answered back at the 4:03 mark of the third period. Following a penalty on Mercyhurst's Melissa Lacroix, the Big Red won the faceoff and
Kendice Ogilvie sent a pass to
Karlee Overguard, who ripped a shot from the right faceoff circle past Mercyhurst goaltender Hillary Pattenden, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Scanzano added an insurance tally at the 12:08 mark of the third period to cap off the scoring.
Mazzotta finished with 23 saves on the day in the loss for the Big Red, while Pattenden stopped 21 shots in taking the victory. Cornell finished 1-for-4 on the power play while holding the Lakers scoreless on four man advantage opportunities.
Cornell returns to action on Friday, playing host to Dartmouth in a 3 p.m. match at Lynah Rink.
