ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's polo team won the William S. Field Invitational on Sunday after knocking off Virginia 18-10 on Sunday morning. The Big Red remained unbeaten and advanced to the finals on Saturday after topping Kentucky 15-11.
As expected, the championship game was not easy. Jess Cross,
Lizzie Wisner, and
Erin Bold put up four goals before the Cavaliers scored and Cornell went up 6-2 after the first chukker. The Big Red continued to hold off a hard fighting Cavalier squad and increased its lead to 12-3 at the half.
Ali Hoffman replaced Cross in the second half and Cornell kept the pressure on. In the third, Cornell managed to increase its lead by one to 15-5 heading into the fourth. The Cavaliers kept fighting and took the fourth , but Cornell took the game at 18-10. Wisner led all scorers with 12 goals, Bold had three, Cross notched two and Hoffman scored one.
On Saturday, Cornell knocked off a hard-charging Kentucky team. A back-and-forth first chukker found the teams right where they started when it ended at a 3-3 tie. As the second started, UK scored on a two-point penalty shot to take a 5-3 lead. As the teams battled for the next couple of minutes, it looked like that might hold up as the defense of both teams was very tough. The two teams then traded goals before Cornell went on a three-goal run to take its first lead of the night at 7-6 going into the half. The third chukker was back-and-forth again and saw Cornell extend its slim lead to 10-8 heading into the forth. After trading goals early in the fourth, Cornell put up another three-goal run that extended the lead to an uncomfortable four goals. Once again, Kentucky got back to within two at 13-11. The Big Red responded with two goals of its own to make the final score 15-11.

Erin Bold had four, Jess Cross notched two and there was one penalty goal.
