Late Goal by Rougeau Lifts Women’s Hockey Over Niagara, 2-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – A goal by Lauriane Rougeau with less than eight minutes to play gave the Big Red women's ice hockey team a 2-1 victory over Niagara this evening at Lynah Rink. With the victory, Cornell improves to 7-3-1 on the season.
 
In addition to Rougeau's goal, the Big Red received a goal from Liz Zorn, a pair of assists from Laura Fortino, and one assist each from Catherine White and Kendice Ogilvie. Goalie Amanda Mazzotta registered 18 saves to earn the win.
 
Cornell outshot Niagara 37-19, as Purple Eagle goalie Jenni Bauer kept her team in the game with 35 saves.
 
The Big Red completely dominated the first half of action, outshooting Niagara 12-3. Cornell's first goal came off the stick of Zorn, who scored from the left side of the net by redirecting a shot from Fortino. White initially set up the play and was also credited with an assist.
 
Niagara (5-6-4) turned up the offensive pressure and up got back into the game with goal by Jacqueline Spring, whose shot hit Mazzotta's pads and trickled over the goal line with just over 10 minutes to play in the period. Jenna Hendrikx and Alison Malty were credited with assists.
 
The final period was a fairly even one, with both teams having opportunities to score, but Mazzotta turned away a breakaway by Mary McKinnon with just over 10 minutes to play in the contest to keep it a 1-1 game and set up Rougeau's game-winner. Ogilvie and Fortino assisted on the goal.  
 
Cornell and Niagara will meet again tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 29 at Lynah Rink at 2 p.m.
