CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The No. 6 ranked Big Red women's squash team defeated No. 7 Stanford, 6-3 in the Howe Cup at the CSA National Championships on Saturday. With the win, Cornell advances to the match for fifth place and will play Yale on Sunday morning.
At the No. 2 position Shivangi Paranjpe defeated Katie Brewster, 3-2. Paranjpe won the first two games, 9-7, 9-7, but her opponent rallied back to tie the match with a 9-6 and 9-7 win in games three and four. The Big Red player secured the victory with a 9-1 win in the fifth and final set.
The Big Red's Jen Gemmell and Liza Stokes defeated their opponents, 3-0, at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively. At the No. 5 spot, Alex Cornett traded games back and forth with Katie Corelli, but Cornett picked up a 9-4 victory in the fifth set to notch the win. Lauren Sachvie edged out Aditi Maliwal 10-9 in her first set, then posted commanding 9-5 and 9-2 wins in games two and three to win at the No. 6 position. At No. 9, Izzy Spyrou faltered only in the second game, to win a 3-1 match over Shannon Harrington.
Cornell will take on the Bulldogs at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.
