SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Big Red women's hockey team closed out its regular season with an 8-0 shutout against Union on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Rebecca Johnston led the Big Red with a hat trick and added two assists, while freshman Catherine White notched two goals with three assists. Freshman Amanda Mazzotta recorded her first career shutout in net for Cornell.
The Big Red took the lead at 13:20 of the first period and never looked back. White sent the puck past goaltender Lundy Day after receiving a pass from Liz Zorn.
In the second period the White opened scoring with only 12 seconds off the clock, and the Big Red added four more goals before the period expired. Johnston scored two goals, while Laura Danforth scored short-handed and Chelsea Karpenko added a goal of her own.
In the third period, Johnston tallied her third goal and Karpenko added her second of the night.
Mazzotta earned her first collegiate win with 15 saves, while Day made 36 saves.
The Big Red will take on Harvard next weekend in the first round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs. Cornell enters the post-season with a 12-12-5 overall record and 8-9-5 mark in the conference.
