ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 4/6 Cornell University men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-1 lead early in the third period and rolled to a 14-4 victory over Canisius this evening on a rain-soaked Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red saw 11 different individuals register at least one point, while goalies Kyle Harer (7) and Jake Myers (3) combined for 10 saves.

 

Max Seibald and John Glynn led the team in goals with three each. Ryan Hurley and Kyle Doctor each had two goals and one assist, while Rob Pannell had one goal and two assists. Mitch McMichael posted a career- and team-high three assist, all of which came on man-up opportunities.  Rounding out the scoring for the Big Red was Roy Lang, David Lau and George Calvert with one goal each, while Rocco Romero and Shane O'Neill both chipped in one assist.

 

Cornell (3-1) outshot the Golden Griffins, 47-23, and held the 41-27 edge in ground balls. The Big Red cleared the ball successfully 18-of-22 times, despite the wet weather conditions, and went a perfect 4-for-4 on extra man opportunities.

 

The home team also dominated on face-offs, winning 15-of-21, thanks to Glynn (8-for-12) and Tommy Schmicker (7-for-9).

 

Canisius (0-3) was led by Jimmy Haney's two goals, while Nick LoCoco added one goal and one assist. Adam Jones also scored once for the Griffs. In goal, Bryan Jack made 12 saves and allowed all 14 goals in 56 minutes, before giving way to Sean Callahan, who did not face a shot.

 

The Big Red wasted little time getting on the board as Glynn won the opening face-off, streaked up field and scored just five seconds into the contest. The goal ties the mark for the second fastest in NCAA history to start of a game (Matt Riter, Syracuse vs. Hofstra on May 22, 1993).

 

Cornell made it a 2-0 game on an unassisted goal by Lang, before Canisius got on the board at the 9:06 mark. The Big Red rattled off the next nine goals, including three man-up goals midway through the second quarter, thanks to a 3:00 non-releasable penalty on Tim Rowley. During the run, which ended with 12:54 to play in the third period, Cornell got back-to-back goals by Seibald, Hurley and Glynn.  

  

The Griffs scored three straight goals late in the third quarter to make it an 11-4 contest, but were outscored 3-0 in the final stanza, as Cornell rolled to the 14-4 victory.

 

The Big Red hits the road once again as it travels to Durham, N.C., to take on ACC foe Duke at Koskinen Stadium on Tuesday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m.
