SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Cornell baseball team opened its spring break trip to California with a pair of losses on Saturday, dropping the opener to Santa Clara by an 8-3 margin before falling in the nightcap, 7-6. The loss sends the Big Red to 2-3 on the season, while Santa Clara improves to 6-7.
Nathan Ford went 6-for-9 on the day, hitting a pair of doubles, and scoring three runs.
Matt Langseth,
Jadd Schmeltzer and
Scott Hardinger each had a pair of hits for the Big Red, while
Mickey Brodsky had three runs batted in.
Matt Hill took the loss in game one, working 5.1 innings, allowing five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits and one walk with a pair of strikeouts. In game two,
Stephen Osterer was tagged with the loss, giving up one run in 2.1 innings of work on a hit with a strikeout.
Cornell wraps up the three-game set with Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon in a 1 p.m. Pacific Time start.
