FAIRFIELD, Va.—Junior Ashley Garvey continued her batting hot streak on Friday night and notched a two-run homer to send the Big Red softball team past Central Connecticut State, 2-1, at the George Mason-Patriot Classic. Freshman Lauren Marx earned the win for Cornell. The Big Red improves to 3-0 for the season.
Junior Alison Intihar went 2-for-3 for the night with four putouts at first base. Marx struck out seven batters in her first start of her collegiate career and held her opponents to three hits. Junior Vanessa Leonhard notched a triple for the Big Red, who had six hits for the game.
Central Connecticut State was led by T. Erickson, who went 2-for-3. J Logan was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Montemurro struck out four Big Red batters and took the loss. The team fell to 0-2 for the season.
In the top of the fourth, Erickson walked and was driven in by a double to center field by Logan.
Cornell rallied in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Intihar singled to shortstop. Cornell's next batter struck out, but Garvey homered to center field to drive in the Big Red's game-winning runs.
The Big Red will play George Mason at 11:45 a.m. and follow with a 4 p.m. game against Niagara on Saturday afternoon.
