Softball Picks Up Two Wins at George Mason-Patriot Classic

FAIRFAX, Va.—The Big Red softball team picked up two wins on Saturday at the George Mason-Patriot Classic. Cornell defeated George Mason, 5-0, in the morning and followed with a 5-1 win over Niagara in the afternoon. The Big Red is now 5-0 for the season.

In its first game, Erica Gaeta went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Junior Elise Menaker went 1-for-2 with three RBI. Senior Meg Risica also drove in a run for Cornell. The Big Red had eight hits for the day. Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple struck out 11 batters for the win and only allowed one hit.

Anderson took the loss for George Mason. See notched her team's only hit.

Risica was hit by a pitch to open the first inning and in a sac bunt attempt, Cawley reached on a fielding error. Intihar advanced both runners with another sac bunt. Menaker followed with a sac fly to center field to drive in Risica.

In the second, Devon Marsh singled and advanced to second on a fielding error. Gaeta singled to second to drive in March. Nicole Cheever, Risica and Cawley each notched singles, with Risica picking up a RBI. Menaker singled to left field to drive in two runs. With six hits, the Big Red went up, 5-0.


Game Two ~ Cornell 5, Niagara 1

Vanessa Leonhard went 3-for-3 with one RBI. Menaker was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Ali Tomlinson moved to 2-0 for the season with 11 strikeouts.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Coffey homered to left field to notch the Purple Eagles' sole run.

The Big Red quickly got to work in the top of the six. With one out, Intihar singled to right field and was driven in by a double off the bat of Menaker. Garvey hit a triple to right field to grab a RBI when Menaker scored. Leonhard singled to center to drive in the Big Red's third run.

In the top of the seventh, Risica singled and March walked. Menaker hit a triple to drive in two more runs

Niagara notched two hits in the seventh and with a walk had three runners on base. The Big Red grabbed a third out to secure its win.

The Big Red will play Central Connecticut State at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning and follow with an 11:15 game against Niagara.
