ITHACA, N.Y.—With three home runs on the day, the Big Red softball team completed its weekend sweep over Princeton on senior day Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Ali Tomlinson launched a three-run homer in game one that drove in the Big Red's game-winning runs allowing Cornell to pick up a 4-2 victory. Seniors Meg Risica and Jessy Berkey's home runs in game two pushed the Big Red past the Tigers, 7-2. Cornell has notched its second-consecutive 40-win season improving to 40-10 overall and 17-3 in the Ivy League. Princeton fell to 14-22 and 8-12 Ivy.
Berkey totaled three hits for Cornell with a home run and two doubles. The senior drove in two runs. Risica also had a homer and two doubles for three RBI. Tomlinson was 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI. Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple had seven strikeouts to pick up the win in game one, while Tomlinson improved to 16-5 for the season.
Princeton was led by Collette Abbott who went 5-for-6 at the plate and had a solo home run. Megan Weidrick also had a solo homer for the Tigers. Jamie Lettire took the loss in game one, while Michelle Tolfa was the pitcher of record in game two.
In the first game, Abbott put Princeton up 1-0 in the top of the first with a home run to right centerfield.
In the bottom of the inning, with two outs, Menaker reached base on an error by the Tigers' shortstop and stole second base. Garvey also reached on an error by the shortstop and advance to second when the ball entered the Big Red dugout, which allowed Menaker to score and tie the game.
Princeton quickly took back its lead in the second when Weidrick had a solo home run to left field.
Risica led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double to centerfield, and Risica followed with a double of her own. Tomlinson cracked a home run over the left field fence to give the Big Red the lead which it held on to, to pick up a 4-2 victory.
Intihar singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning in game one. With one out, Menaker doubled to center to drive in Cornell's first run. Garvey singled to right field, and Risica followed with a three-run homer to give Cornell a 4-0 advantage.
In the top of the third, Ellen Scott singled up the middle, and Abbott was hit by a pitch. Arguedas singled up the middle to drive in a run for the Tigers.
Risica led off with a double to left in the top of the fourth, and Berkey notched a home run over the centerfield fence to increase her team's lead to 6-1.
Berkey walked in the bottom of the sixth and advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Senior Nicole Cheever singled to drive in Berkey.
Scott reached base on a Cornell error in the top of the seventh inning. She advanced on a passed ball, and made it to third on a single by Abbott. Welch reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Princeton's final run.
The Big Red will play Syracuse on Tuesday afternoon for one game that begins at 4 p.m. at the Niemand·Robison Field. As the Ivy South Division champions, Cornell will play host to either Dartmouth or Harvard for a best-of-three series for the Ivy title on May 2-3.
