Pula Named To All-Tournament Team as Big Red Falls to Buffalo

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell volleyball team fell to Buffalo this evening, 3-0, in the final game of the Cornell Invitational. For the second tournament in a row, Deveney Pula earned all-tournament honors, as the Big Red fell, 25-19, 25-11 and 25-21.

Pula led Cornell against the Bulls with 10 kills on 33 attempts to go along with seven digs. Jessica Misse and Erin McCarthy both chipped in six kills apiece, while Jordan Reeder and Sydney Campbell handed out 13 and 12 assists, respectively.

Defensively, Megan Mushovic tallied 10 digs, while Risa Ka'awa added nine. Misse also had a team-high three block assists, while Reeder, Juliana Rogers and Alice Cope added two block assists apiece.

Buffalo (9-4) finished the Invitational with a perfect 3-0 record and Dani Silvers was named Tournament MVP.

Against the Big Red, Kelsey Lueders had 10 kills on 18 attempts, to go along with five block assists, while Marisa Hornbaker had 10 kills and seven digs. Lindsey Schlegel ran the offense with 32 assists and Tori Beckman had a match-high 15 digs.

In the first set, the Big Red used a 7-2 scoring run to erase an early five-point deficit and knot the game at 13-13. During the run, Cornell got a pair of kills by Pula, two of her three during the set, and a kill by Cope, as well as a service ace by Meagan Tatum.

Buffalo responded with three unanswered points to go up, 16-13, but Cornell took advantage of several Bulls' miscues to pull back within one-point, 18-17. Once again, Buffalo fought back to push its lead to three points, 21-18, and then outscored the Big Red, 4-1 down the stretch to take the 25-19 victory.

Cornell got off to a quick start in the second set, going up 3-1, thanks mostly to one kill each by Rogers and Pula. Buffalo came back to tie the game at 4-4, and the teams traded points all the way to 8-8. From there, however, the Bulls used a dominating 14-2 scoring run to pull away for the 25-11 victory.

The final set proved to be the Big Red's best effort of the night, as the teams tied 10 times through the early going. With the score tied at 14-14, however, the Bulls' scored four unanswered points to build an 18-14 lead. Back-to-back kills by McCarthy and Rogers pulled Cornell back within two, 19-17. The teams traded service errors to make it a 20-18 game, but Buffalo outscored the Big Red, 5-3, down the stretch for the 25-21 win.

Cornell is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when it travels up I-81 to take on in-state rival Syracuse at 7 p.m.
