WASHINGTON, D.C. – For the second game in a row, the Big Red field hockey team jumped out to a large halftime lead and never looked back as it defeated Georgetown, 5-1, this afternoon on the campus of American University. Five different Cornell players got into the scoring column as the Big Red improved to 2-0 on the year.
Cornell was led by
Kelley Kantarian and
Catie De Stio, who registered one goal and one assist apiece. Also scoring for the Big Red was
Katie Kirnan,
Mattie Prodanovic and
Sara Sanders, while
Elizabeth Schovee tallied her first collegiate point with one assist.
Sophomore
Alex Botte got her first start of the season and made three saves, while allowing just one goal, to earn her first career victory.
Georgetown (0-4) received its goal from Kimberly Keating, while Clodagh Coghlan made seven saves and allowed five goals in the loss.
The Big Red outshot the Hoyas, 18-5, and held the 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Cornell wasted little time in getting on the board, as
Sara Sanders scored off a pass from De Stio to make it a 1-0 game at the 2:12 mark. Just over two minutes later, De Stio made it a 2-0 game, with the assist going to Kantarian.
Kantarian registered a goal of her own in the 17th minute, before Keating got the Hoyas on the board, making it a 3-1 contest at the 20:07 mark.
Kirnan ended the first half, scoring off a pass from Schovee, and Prodanovic scored the final goal late in the contest to account for the 5-1 final.
The Big Red is back in action this week, as it welcomes Siena to Marsha Dodson Field for its home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m.
