Box Score
CANTON, N.Y. --
Ben Scrivens made 35 saves, one off his season high, as the Cornell men's hockey team picked up a 1-1 tie at St. Lawrence on Saturday night at Appleton Arena.
Sean Collins scored the lone goal for the Big Red in the contest.
Collins scored for the second time in the last three games, burying a rebound off a shot by
Nick D'Agostino, while
Joe Scali also collected an assist for the Big Red. Cornell (9-4-3, 7-2-2 ECAC Hockey) went 0-for-1 on the power play on the night while holding St. Lawrence to one goal in five power-play chances.
Travis Vermeulen scored the lone goal for the Saints, while Kain Tisi stopped 27 shots for St. Lawrence (11-8-4, 5-3-2 ECAC Hockey).
Scrivens was sharp early, making nine saves in the first 10 minutes, including a pair of back-to-back stops on St. Lawrence's Max Mobley. Tisi was just as sharp, making a glove save on a shot by
Riley Nash and having a pair of shots bang off his mask.
With just under five minutes to play in the first period, Scrivens was again tested repeatedly. A shot by Peter Child from the point was turned aside, only to have Jacob Drewiske's rebound chance on the weak side turned aside on a diving, sprawling save. The puck worked its way back to Child, who ripped another shot from the left point that Scrivens batted up in the air. Drewiske then batted the puck out of midair into the goal, but referee Mike Baker immediately waved it off as Drewiske batted it into the goal with his hand.
After escaping the early flurry, the Big Red got on the board first when D'Agostino took a pass from
Joe Scali and ripped a shot from the point that was saved by Tisi, but Collins was there to clean up the rebound, back-handing the puck into the net for the early goal with 1:11 to play in the first period. The Big Red escaped the period with Scrivens stopping all 19 shots he faced, tying for the second most in a period this season and the third-highest single-period total of his career after stopping 20 in the first period at Yale earlier this season and in the third period on Nov. 7, 2008, at Princeton.
The intensity picked up in the second period, and with play getting chippy on both sides, the Big Red's
Joe Devin went to the penalty box for a dubious hitting from behind call, and Cornell paid for it with the tying goal from the Saints. St. Lawrence's George Hughes sent the puck from the center point to the right for Travis Vermeulen, who sent a wrist shot through a screen that went up over the shoulder of Scrivens on the stick side, knotting the score at one with 12:24 to play in the second period.
As the intensity continued to build, it appeared as though the officials felt Cornell was entirely responsible, as first
Brendon Nash was sent to the box for a holding the stick penalty, then, with about a minute left on that penalty,
Riley Nash went to the box for a five-minute boarding call. Cornell killed off the 5-on-3 to get
Brendon Nash back, but with 3:15 left on Riley's penalty, Nash went back to the box for another two minutes for contact to the head-roughing, giving St. Lawrence a full two more minutes of a 5-on-3. The Big Red penalty killers did their job, though, as they ended the 5-on-3. As
Brendon Nash got out of the box, he worked his way back into the Cornlel zone and broke up a pass across the blue line and towards center ice. Nash took off in pursuit and got off a contested breakaway that was stopped by Tisi with the rebound coming off to Scali in front. Tisi stopped Scali's chance, sending the puck into the corner, where Scali was crunched into the boards by Derek Keller, who earned two minutes for boarding, ending the Saints power play, the first penalty called on the Saints on the night.
As the penalty to
Riley Nash expired, Cornell finally got its first power play of the night with two minutes left, an abbreviated man advantage that the Saints were able to kill off. Despite the Big Red spending more than eight minutes of the second period on the penalty kill, Cornell still held the Saints to just five shots on the power play and 10 for the period.
The third period went by without incident, as no penalties or goals were recorded, though both goaltenders were up to the task on each of the four shots they faced. Scrivens was particularly sharp, making a pair of saves on a breakaway to keep the Big Red alive.
Cornell's best chance in the overtime came on
Keir Ross's shot from the point that was stopped by Tisi and batted up in the air. Tisi lost sight of the puck as it lay in the crease, but no Cornell player could get to it as it was covered up for the faceoff with 13 seconds to play.
Cornell returns home for its first games in two months next weekend when it will step outside of league play for a two-game series with North Dakota. The Big Red and Fighting Sioux will face off on Friday and Saturday, with both games starting at 7 p.m. Friday's game will be televised live on Time Warner Sports throughout New York.
