PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Big Red volleyball team defeated Brown, 3-1, this afternoon at Pizzatola Center in Providence, R.I. Cornell fought back from a 25-23 loss in the first set to take the next three, 25-18, 26-24 and 25-18.
Janel Forte and
Erin McCarthy both registered 16 kills, with McCarthy hitting an impressive .368 (16-2-38) and adding 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Kelly Hansen also chipped in eight kills, while
Madeleine Przybyl posted eight block assists and one solo block. Setter
Jordan Reeder had a solid day with 41 assists, eight block assists, six digs and two kills. Defensively, libero
Taylor Nieman registered 23 digs and defensive specialist
Risa Ka'awa registered nine.
Brown (6-12, 0-6 Ivy) had three players register double-digit kills with Emma Pastore (13), Thea Derrough (13) and Katrina Post (10) leading the way. The Bears also had three players with double-digit digs, including Annika Gliottone (16), Bailey Wendzel (15) and Post (10). Setter Alexandra Rieckhoff tallied 41 assists and eight digs.
In the first set, Cornell jumped out to a 6-2 lead, thanks in part to a pair of kills by
Alice Cope and a kill from McCarthy, but the home team responded with a 10-1 scoring run to build a 12-7 lead. The Big Red fought back to pull within two points on a service ace from Nieman, 12-10, but Cornell could not get any closer as Brown stretched its lead back to five at 20-15. The teams traded points to 24-19, but Cornell held off four set points before a Big Red attack error gave Brown the 25-23 victory.
The Bears opened the second set with a 4-1 run but back-to-back kills by McCarthy started a Big Red comeback as the visitors scored six unanswered points to take a 7-4 lead. A Cornell service error temporarily ended the run, but the Big Red slowly stretched its lead to nine points, 20-11. Brown outscored the visitors down the stretch, but the Big Red won the set, 25-18.
The third set was a back and forth affair with a total of eight ties and four lead changes. Midway through the set, the Bears used a 7-2 scoring run to go up, 18-13, but Cornell clawed its way back into the contest. Trailing 24-20, the Big Red used kills by Forte and
Rachel D'Epagnier, as well as two Brown attack errors to knot the game at 24-24. Cornell came all the way back with a kill by Przybyl giving the visitors a lead and the set ended on a Bears' hitting error.
The Big Red jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth and never looked back, holding at least a two-point lead the entire set en route to the 25-18 victory.
Cornell (4-11, 2-4 Ivy) returns home for its final non-conference game of the season as it plays host to Syracuse at Newman Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
