WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Big Red sprint football team used a 17-point second quarter outburst to secure a 20-10 victory and hand Army its first loss of the season this evening at Shea Stadium in West Point, N.Y. With the victory, Cornell remains perfect at 4-0 (2-0 CSFL), while the Black Knights slipped to 2-1 (1-1 CSFL).
The Cornell offense was led by the quarterback duo of
Elliot Corey and
Brendan Miller, who threw for 81 and 72 yards, respectively, with each throwing one touchdown. Corey completed 8-of-20 passes and Miller connected on 5-for-14. Spenser Grunenfelder and
Garrett Koehler each had one touchdown catch. The Big Red rushing game was nearly completely shut down by the Black Knights, but Doug Famularo racked up 71 yards on 18 carries.
Tim Dooley led the Cornell defense with 14 tackles, including two tackles for a loss. As a unit, the Big Red forced six turnovers with four fumbles and two interceptions. Dooley again led the way, forcing two fumbles and intercepting one pass. Clay Hemminger and
Ted Alexander also forced fumbles, while
Chris Lamont intercepted one pass.
The Black Knights were led by quarterback Tim Meier, who completed 24-of-52 passes for 249 yard to go along with one touchdown and one interception. Meier's favorite target was Cody Nyp, catching seven passes for 81 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Army rushed for just 72 total yards, led by Marquis Morris and Michael Meier with 37 and 28 yards, respectively.
Defensively, the Black Knights were led by Carlos Cook with 11 tackles, while Bryan Girouard chipped in 10 and Eric Kanney had a game-high five tackles for a loss.
Army jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a 41-yard Kevin Scruggs' field goal just under five minutes into the contest. Neither team managed to score for the remainder of the quarter, but just 1:27 into the second stanza, Corey hit Grunenfelder for a 29-yard touchdown strike and
Alex Perilstein added the point after to give the Big Red a lead it would not relinquish.
Cornell scored twice more in the second quarter, first on a 32-yard field goal by Perilstein before Miller connected with Koehler for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Perilstein's extra-point put the Big Red up, 17-3 heading into halftime.
After a mostly quiet third quarter, Perilstein scored with just over one minute to play in the stanza, connecting on a 33-yard field goal to extend Cornell's lead to 20-3.
Just moments into the fourth quarter, Army got on the board with a touchdown as Nyp caught a 19-yard pass from Meier, but that was as close as it would get as the Big Red took the 20-10 victory.
Cornell will enjoy a well-deserved bye week before opening a three-game home-stand as it welcomes Penn to Schoellkopf Field on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
