HEAD COACH BILL COURTNEY
Cornell head coach Bill Courtney is in his first season at Cornell (1-0, 1.000) ... Courtney became the fifth Robert E. Gallagher '44 Coach of Men's Basketball at Cornell on April 23, 2010.
THE STORY LINES
• After opening the 2010-11 season with a gritty 65-61 win to give first-year head coach
Bill Courtney his first collegiate coaching win, Cornell will face a bigger challenge against Seton Hall.
• The Pirates handed Cornell one of its five losses a season ago as the Big Red eventually made a run to the NCAA Sweet 16 and finished 29-5.
• Cornell won its first game despite missing injured point guard
Chris Wroblewski, a consensus preseason first-team All-Ivy selection and the squad's only returning starter.
• Seton Hall and new head coach Kevin Willard will be out for their first win of 2010-11 campaign after dropping a 62-56 decision at No. 22 Temple on Friday evening.
THE STREAKS
• Cornell is 73-21 in the last four seasons (.777).
• The Big Red is 38-4 in its last 42 Ivy League contests over the last three years (.905).
• The team is 21-5 in its last 26 games away from Newman Arena (.808) and 16-4 in its last 20 true road games (.800).
• Cornell is 41-3 over its last 44 home games (.905), 24-1 in the last two seasons (.960) and 36-2 in the last three years (.947). The team's current 11-game home streak is the second-longest in school history.
• In non-conference games, the Big Red is 35-17 over the last three seasons (.673).
SEASON OPENERS: The Big Red improved its all-time record in season openers to 73-41 all-time (.640). Cornell has won six consecutive openers after its 65-61 victory at Albany on Friday, and is now 12-19 on the road to open a year, 53-16 at home and 8-6 in neutral site/unknown site games.
WHAT RETURNS WITHOUT WROBO: While the numbers overall are staggering for any basketball team, without
Chris Wroblewski, who missed the season opener, Cornell has gone from one of the most experienced teams in the country last year to one of the least this season. In the opener against Albany, Cornell's active roster members had combined for 456 points, 377 rebounds and 108 assists in 229 varsity contests (3 starts). Those are averages of 2.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game.
CORNELL BEYOND THE ARC — LOOKING FOR 600: After hitting 10 treys against Albany in a 65-61 victory over the Great Danes on Friday, Cornell has now hit at least one 3-pointer in 599 consecutive games, meaning if it hits one against Seton Hall, that stretch will hit 600 consecutive games. The last time Cornell did not hit a 3-pointer was against Denison in the 1988-89 season opener (0-for-2). Since the 3-point shot came into effect in NCAA play during the 1986-87 season, Cornell has hit at least one shot behind the arc in 649 of 653 games, connecting on 3,961 treys, an average of 6.07 per game. Cornell has set records for treys in a season in each of the previous three years, going from 228 in 2007-08 to 241 in 2008-09 and to 326 a year ago. The Big Red hit for double figures in 3-pointers 18 times in 2009-10, including an Ivy League single-game record 20 vs. Brown.
COURTNEY WINS OPENER: When Cornell head coach
Bill Courtney earned his first collegiate coaching victory with a 65-61 victory, he became the first Big Red mentor to win his first game on the sidelines since Scott Thompson's 1996-97 team knocked off Buffalo at home, 70-62. First-year coaches at Cornell now have an 11-10 record in their first games for the Big Red.
WIRE ALMOST CAPTURES RARE DOUBLE: Senior
Adam Wire made a bid for his first career double-double with 11 rebounds and a career-high eight assists. No Cornell player has ever recorded a double-double of assists and rebounds.
FERRY BOMBS AWAY: Junior guard
Drew Ferry scored 12 points in his first game at Cornell and will be looked to for scoring throughout the season. He attempted 15 shots, including 12 beyond the 3-point arc in the win over Albany. The 12 3-point attempts ranks 17th in a single game by a Big Red player (record: 19 by
Ryan Wittman at Syracuse in 2008-09).
GRAY STEPS UP: Sophomore
Johnathan Gray, who joined the team mid-year in 2009-10 after serving the first half of the season as a team manager, came off the bench to score the first points of his career with a 3-pointer just over five minutes left in the first half against Albany. Two minutes later, he hit a second that tied the game after the Big Red had trailed by 12 early. He added two more treys in the second half to register 12 points.
NOTING THE ALBANY GAME:
• Junior guard
Drew Ferry, a transfer from Valparaiso by way of Palm Beach State College, had a career-high 12 points. His previous Division I high was seven points for Valpo against Detroit on Feb. 13, 2009.
• Making their first collegiate starts were sophomore guard
Miles Asafo-Adjei and senior guard
Max Groebe, senior forward
Aaron Osgood and sophomore forward
Errick Peck.

• Groebe matched his career-best with 15 points, a mark he has hit twice previously.

• Freshman
Manny Sahota also earned his first career playing time.
• As a team, Cornell hit 10 3-pointers. The Big Red reached double figures in treys 18 times a season ago, a school record.
• The victory was Cornell's first season-opening road victory since ... well, last year. The Big Red knocked off Alabama 71-67 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Prior to that, Cornell had two other season-opening wins come on the road, topping Buffalo 78-72 to open the 2002-03 campaign and dropping Northwestern 64-61 to begin the 2006-07 season.
• Cornell has won 10 of its last 11 games decided by 10 points or less, with the only loss coming at then-No. 1 Kansas (71-66 on Jan. 6, 2010).
• The Big Red extended its road win streak to six games with the win over the Great Danes.
• Cornell is 5-1 against teams from New York over the last two seasons with the victory, including 3-1 on the road.
• The Big Red is now 15-2 in its last 17 non-conference games.
