Box Score
ITHACA, N.Y. --
Nick D'Agostino had a goal and an assist and
Joe Devin and
Greg Miller both tallied a pair of assists as the Cornell men's hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over Colgate in front of 5,413 fans at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Saturday night. The win marked the 300th career victory of head coach
Mike Schafer.
Tyler Roeszler,
John Esposito and
Sean Collins each added a goal for the Big Red (3-6), while
Kirill Gotovets added an assist on the night. Cornell got 16 saves from
Andy Iles in goal and went 1-for-5 on the power play on the night, with Collins' game-winner being the only man-advantage marker of the evening.
For Colgate, Jeremy Price, Austin Mayer and Chris Wagner each scored a goal, while Brian Day, Austin Smith, Nick Prockow, Thomas Larkin and Robbie Bourdon each tallied an assist. Alex Evin took the loss in goal, stopping 21 Cornell shots, as Colgate (2-9-1) finished the night scoreless in three power-play chances.
Colgate took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Price scored on a shot from the point that found its way through Iles' pads, then made the score 2-0 in the second when Mayer tallied his goal when the Raiders skated in on a two-on-one.
D'Agostino got the Big Red on the scoreboard at the 11:17 mark of the second period, taking a cross-ice pass from Miller and firing a shot on goal that was initially stopped by Evin, but the rebound bounced up and over the shoulder of the netminder before trickling into the net.
Two and a half minutes later, the Raiders made the score 3-1 with Wagner's goal, setting the stage for Cornell's comeback. That rally began when, after killing off a Colgate power play, Roeszler found himself alone behind the Colgate defense, where Miller spotted him and hit him in stride with a pinpoint pass. Roeszler finished off the breakaway by slotting the puck around the outstretched leg of Evin at the 3:47 mark of the third period.
Three minutes later, Esposito notched his goal, a play that started with a shot from D'Agostino that was blocked.
Joe Devin then put a shot on goal that Evin stopped, and Esposito was there on the post to jam home the rebound to tie the score at three.
The game-winner came at the 11:31 mark of the period, when Cornell finally got a little bit of luck to go its way. Gotovets sent a puck toward the net from the goal line extended that banked off the shin pad of Collins and into the goal, giving Cornell the lead for the first time on the night and capping the comeback.
The Big Red closes out the fall semester next weekend when it welcomes Alabama-Huntsville to Lynah Rink for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday. Both contests begin at 7 p.m.
