PRINCETON, N.J. – The Cornell women's basketball team fell to Ivy League leading Princeton this evening, 96-59, at Jadwin Gymnasium in Princeton N.J. The Big Red will play its final road game of the season tomorrow, Feb. 27, against Penn at The Palestra at 7 p.m.
Allie Munson posted her first career double-double to lead Cornell with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while
Christine Vlasic chipped in eight points.
Lauren Benson and
Spencer Lane handed out five assists apiece.
Princeton (21-2, 9-0) was led by Niveen Rasheed with 18 rebounds, while Devona Allgood added 15. Both Rasheed and Allgood grabbed seven rebounds to help the Tigers to a 40-31 advantage on the boards. Also scoring in double-figures for Princeton was Lauren Edwards and Kate Miller with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Despite having a solid opening half of offense, shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from 3-point range, the Big Red struggled in stopping the potent Princeton offense, which connected on 52.5 percent overall and 41.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Cornell (6-17, 1-9) finished the game shooting 44.2 percent overall (23-for-52) and 31.3 percent from 3-point range (5-of-16), but Princeton shot 48.7 percent from the floor (37-for-76). The Tigers used 20 offensive rebounds to rack up 20 second chance points and forced 22 Cornell turnovers with 16 steals that resulted in 23 points for the home team.
Cornell hung with Princeton in the opening moments of the half, as a layup by
Clare Fitzpatrick and back-to-back treys by
Virginia McMunigal and Benson kept the Big Red within striking distance, 12-8, before the Tigers used a 10-2 scoring run to go up, 22-10, with just over 13 minutes to play in the half. Princeton would not relinquish its double-digit lead the rest of the way, eventually pushing its opening half lead to as many as 24 points.
The Tigers used a 16-2 run at the start of the second half of play to put the game out of reach as it cruised to the 96-59 victory.
