PHILADELPHIA – The Cornell women's basketball team picked up a win in its final road game of the season, as it defeated Penn, 60-42, this evening at the Palestra. The Big Red used a 17-5 run midway through the second half to erase a two-point halftime deficit and steal the victory.
Cornell (7-18, 2-10) enjoyed a balanced offensive attack as five different players scored in double-figures, led by
Allie Fedorowicz's 13 points.
Clare Fitzpatrick chipped in 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while
Lauren Benson also scored 12 points to go along with four assists.
Allie Munson also had a solid outing with 11 points and five rebounds, while
Taylor Flynn rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, to go along with eight rebounds.
Penn (1-24, 0-11) was led by Jen Smith with 10 points, while Brianna Bradford added nine. Jess Knapp grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds before fouling out of the contest.
The Big Red overcame a slow start to finish the game shooting 43.1 percent overall and 31.6 percent from 3-point range, while holding Penn to 27.6 percent from the floor and just 15 percent from beyond the arc. Cornell also held the edge in rebounds, 41-32.
After going into the half trailing, 20-18, Cornell regained its lead with its first shot of the second stanza as Fedorowicz banged home a 3-pointer. The lead was short-lived, however, as six straight points by the home team put Penn up, 26-21, at the 16:27 mark.
A floater in the lane by Fedorowicz ended the Quaker run and a traditional three-point play by Flynn tied the game at 26-26. On Cornell's next possession, Flynn found Fedorowicz cutting to the basket and the senior hit a wide-open layup to restore the two-point lead to the Big Red.
The teams traded baskets on their next two possessions before Caitlin Slover hit a 3-pointer to give the lead back to Penn, 31-30, with 12:21 to play in the contest.
A steal and a fastbreak layup by Flynn put Cornell back up by one-point, but a single made free throw from Bradford knotted the game for the third and final time. Back-to-back foul-line jumpers by Fitzpatrick, one from each side of the key, gave Cornell a 36-32 lead at the 9:02 mark. Bradford closed the gap with a layup on Penn's next possession, but a big 3-pointer by Fedorowicz as the shot clock expired, followed by two made free throws from
Allie Munson made it a 41-34 game.
Another single free throw from Bradford ended the Cornell run, but Munson answered with another strong post move that resulted in a wide-open layup. Not to be outdone, Fitzpatrick faked out her defender in the lane and buried a floater to push the Big Red lead to double-digits, 45-35. Moments later, Flynn knocked down a trey from the left corner to put Cornell up, 48-36, with 3:55 to play.
The Big Red outscored Penn, 12-6, down the stretch to take the 60-42 victory.
Cornell opened the game strong, jumping out to a quick 7-2 lead behind the strength of a layup from Munson, a trey from Benson and a foul-line jumper by Virginia MdMunigal. A jumper from the corner by Knapp made it a one-possession game, but another 3-pointer from Benson gave Cornell a 10-4 lead at the 13:20 mark.
Back-to-back layups by Slover and Knapp closed the gap once again, but an offensive put-back from Flynn and a strong post move from Munson pushed Cornell's lead back to six points, 14-8, with just under nine minutes to play in the opening half.
From there, the Quakers outscored Cornell 12-4 down the stretch to take the slim 20-18 lead into the intermission.
Cornell wraps up the 2009-10 season and honors its three seniors –
Lauren Benson,
Allie Fedorowicz and
Virginia McMunigal – next weekend when it plays host to Brown and Yale on March 5 and March 5, respectively. Both games are slated to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
