BETHLEHEM, Pa.—The Big Red wrestling team advanced five wrestlers to the finals of the EIWA Championships on Saturday to sit in first place as a team after day one. Cornell wrestlers Troy Nickerson (125), Mike Grey (133), Kyle Dake (141), Mack Lewnes (174) and Cam Simaz (197) will all wrestle for the championship in their respective weight classes on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red holds a 31.5 point lead over second place Lehigh and Penn in the team race. Cornell has four wrestlers that will compete in the place matches on Sunday morning in the consolation round.

At 125 pounds, Nickerson entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and had a bye in the first round. The Big Red wrestler opened the day by pinning Steven Keith of Harvard in 2:46 to earn bonus points for Cornell. Nickerson advanced to the finals with a 9-0 major decision over the No. 4 seed Aaron Kalil of Navy. Nickerson will face the No. 7 seed Garrett Frey of Princeton in the finals.
Grey followed Nickerson's lead at 133 pounds, winning his quarterfinal bout with a pin in 2:06 over Navy's Allen Stein (8). Grey continued a strong performance in the semifinals by earning more bonus points for Cornell with a 10-1 major decision over Bucknell's David Marable. Grey will face the No. 2 seed Matt Fisk of Lehigh in the finals.
Freshman Kyle Dake had a bye in the first round at 141 pounds. The No. 1 seed opened his day with a 5-4 victory over Matt Pagan of Navy. Dake advanced to the finals with a 6-2 win over Penn's Zack Kemmerer. Dake will take on the seventh seed, Jordan Lipp of American in the championship bout.
At 149 pounds, Corey Manson won his pigtail match by a 3-2 score over Columbia's Steve Santos. In the quarterfinals, Manson lost a close 4-2 decision to the third seed, Matt Kyler of Army. Manson bounced back by pinning Franklin & Marshall's Eric Norgard in 6:50. Manson then faced No. 2 Kyle Borschoff and narrowly lost a 3-2 decision. In the match for seventh place, Manson will take on Rutger's David Greenwald.
Sophomore Derek Schreiner wrestled in his first EIWA tournament at 157 pounds. Schreiner faced two tough opponents. Navy's Bryce Saddoris, the No. 3 seed, won a 12-2 major decision over Schreiner in the first round. Schreiner was then narrowly defeated by the No. 5 seed, Matt Dragon, 4-2.
At 165 pounds, Justin Kerber opened his day with a 10-6 decision over Greg Zanetti of Rutgers. In the semifinals, Kerber was edged out by Lehigh's Brandon Hatchett, 2-1. He will compete in the wrestlebacks on Sunday against Penn's Stephen Burak.
No. 1 Mack Lewnes had a quick start to his day at 174 pounds by pinning Columbia's Stephen West in 0:34. In the quarterfinals, Lewnes earned more bonus points for Cornell with a 14-3 major decision over Princeton's Michael Erdman. The Big Red junior advanced to the finals with a 5-3 decision over Robert Hamlin of Lehigh. Lewnes will meet the No. 2 seed, Scott Giffin of Penn, in the finals on Sunday.
At 184 pounds, Steve Bosak pinned his first opponent, Matt Latessa, of Franklin & Marshall in 1:07. Bosak followed with an 11-0 major decision over Andrew Buck of Navy in the quarterfinals. Bosak wrestled strong in the semifinals against No. 1 Michael Cannon, but the American senior countered his attacks to win a 6-0 decision. Bosak will face Bucknell's Rob Waltko in the consolation round.
Sophomore Cam Simaz pinned his first opponent, Sean Murphy of Harvard, in 1:07 at 197 pounds. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Columbia's Louis Miller, 8-3. Simaz advanced to the finals with a commanding 19-7 major decision over Danial Mitchell of American. Simaz will take on Micah Burak in the finals on Sunday.
At heavyweight, Josh Arnone got off to a strong start by pinning Robert Grogan of Princeton in 2:17. He racked up more bonus points for Cornell in his quarterfinal bout with a 15-0 tech fall in 6:10 over American's Mingo Grant. Arnone was narrowly edged out in the semifinals by the No. 1 seeded Zach Rey (Lehigh), 3-1 in sudden victory. He will face Columbia's Kevin Lester in the wrestlebacks on Sunday.
The place matches will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning and the championship finals will start at 3 p.m.
