Game 1 Box Score (Cornell 6, Penn 0)
Game 2 Box Score (Penn 9, Cornell 6)
PHILADELPHIA – A no-hitter from
Elizabeth Dalrymple gave the Big Red softball team a 6-0 victory over Penn, before falling, 9-6, in the final contest of the weekend's four-game series. After a commanding victory in the first game, the Big Red found itself trailing, 9-3, entering the top of the seventh inning of the nightcap and nearly came all the way back to steal the victory.
“I thought we showed a lot of fight at the end of the second game,” said head coach
Dick Blood. “Obviously, we would have liked to have won all four games, but to win three-out-of-four is a great way to start play in the Southern Division.”
Dalrymple, who was part of a five-inning no-hitter as a freshman, threw her first career complete game no-hitter and was the driving force of the Big Red in the first game. She finished the game with eight strike outs and allowed just two walks, keeping her from a perfect game. Offensively, Cornell was sparked by a five-run first inning and was led by
Kristen Towne,
Devon March and
Erin Keene, who all went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Big Red jumped all over Penn in the top of the first, thanks to singles from
Alyson Intihar,
Shannon Crane,
Ashley Garvey,
Kristen Towne,
Devon March and
Erin Keene.
Elise Menaker also registered a sacrifice fly to score Intihar, while
Vanessa Leonhard reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Garvey. Crane, Towne and March also crossed the plate in the first, while a homerun by Keene in the top of the sixth accounted for Cornell's final run of the day.
Penn (13-18, 7-5 Ivy) got out to a quick start in the second game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The Big Red battled back with a homer from Towne in the top of the second and then tied the game the next inning when a homer by Keene was followed by a sacrifice fly from Menaker that scored Intihar.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Quakers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up, 9-3. Cornell opened the top of the seventh with a double from Keene and followed that with a two-bagger from
Marissa Amiraian, that scored Keen. Amirain moved over to third on a single from Intihar and then scored on a sacrifice fly from
Izzy Pines. Garvey then drove in the Big Red's final run of the game when her double to left center scored Intihar.
Cornell (24-11, 10-2 Ivy ) was led by Intihar in the second game, as she went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Keene and Amiraian both went 2-for-3 and combined to score three runs for the Big Red.
