ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team will gear up for this weekend's Ivy League championship when it meets Binghamton in a midweek doubleheader. The Big Red has played outstanding softball over the last several weeks, going 12-2 in its last 14 contests to improve its season record to 33-12 and clinching both the Ivy League South Division crown and the top overall record in the Ancient Eight. Cornell will face Harvard in a best-of-three series for the conference's automatic bid beginning on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand*Robison Field. The teams will play two games on Saturday, and if a deciding game three is needed, it will be played on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Cornell is an impressive 22-9 away from home this season, but the Bearcats are 11-4 at home. The Big Red's offense has five regular starters hitting .355 or better with a team batting average of .315, a mark that ranks fourth all-time at Cornell. Reigning Ivy League Player of the Year

Binghamton brings a 24-17 overall record and an 8-10 mark in America East play entering the contest and is coming off a weekend series win over Stony Brook, responding to a game one loss with victories in each of the next two contests. In all, four regulars are batting over .300, led by Deannie Plemon at .373 with 14 home runs and 43 RBI. Along with Jessica Phillips (.341, 15 HR, 33 RBI), the duo are one of the most feared power-hitting duos in the Northeast. Leading the Bearcats on the mound is Kristen Emerling with a 14-4 record and a 1.67 ERA. First year head coach Michelle Burrell has already worked wonders after moving over from the University of Rochester, more than tripling last season's win total overall (7-36) and quadrupling the league win total (2-19).
