BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In its second game of the afternoon at the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational, the Big Red volleyball team fell to IPFW in a tightly contested match, 3-1. After winning the first set, 25-22, Cornell fell in the next three sets, 29-27, 25-20 and 33-31. For her efforts over the course of the weekend,
Risa Ka'awa was named to the all-tournament team.
Cornell (1-5) had one of its best outings of the season with
Kelly Hansen and
Janel Forte registering 19 and 16 kills, respectively, while
Madeleine Przybyl and
Alessa Cekauskas chipped in nine kills each. Forte led the team with an impressive .424 hitting percentage (16-2-33).
Jordan Reeder posted a career-high 52 assists in the four-set match to go along with 15 digs and two blocks. Reeder was one of a trio of Big Red players that registered double-digit digs, to go along with
Risa Ka'awa (25) and
Sierra Young (12).
IPFW (5-5), the reigning Summit League tournament champion, had three players register more than 10 kills, led by Mayara Schlindwein with 18. Megan Steenhuysen handed out 46 assists, while five Mastodons tallied double-digit digs with Tessa McGill's 19 leading the way.
The Big Red outhit IPFW .228 - .192, posted more kills (66-56), more digs (80-77) and more blocks (9-6), but the Mastodons registered 11 service aces and just four service errors, while Cornell had just five service aces and 13 service errors.
Cornell will stay on the road as it travels to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Colgate Invitational next weekend. The Big Red will face Big East foe UConn on Friday, Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m., before coming back the next day to play Akron and the host Raiders at 10:00 a.m., and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
