ITHACA, N.Y. -- Maneesha Chitanvis scored a goal and assisted on another as the Big Red women's soccer team knocked off Binghamton 3-1 on Wednesday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. After winning just one game in all of 2009, Cornell evened its record at 3-3. The team has now scored 14 goals in just six games, matching the most goals in a season by head coach Danielle LaRoche's team.

Chitanvis led the scoring parade, while Caedran Harvey and Rachel Nichols also found the back of the net. Abigail Apistolas recorded an assist and Kelly Murphy posted four saves in goal, coming within two minutes of a shutout.

The Big Red out-shot Binghamton 13-9, though the Bearcats held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Mary DeWitte had BU's lone goal which was assisted by Candace Rowland. Carrie Martin made five saves in the loss between the pipes.

Cornell got on the scoreboard first when Harvey tapped in a crossing pass from Chitanvis in the 18th minute for the lone score of the first half. Murphy made a pair of saves as the Big Red out-shot the Bearcats 10-5 in the first 45 minutes.

Chitanvis got on the board herself in the 51st minute, chipping a ball over the goalkeeper on a rush to make it 2-0. That lead jumped to 3-0 just 10 minutes later when Rachel Nichols blasted a 20-yard shot over the goalkeeper's head after a pass from Abigail Apistolas for some insurance.

The Bearcats were able to get on the board in the 88th minute when Mary DeWitte scored her first goal of the year, but it proved to be too little, too late.

The Big Red returns to action on Friday, Sept. 24 when it opens Ancient Eight competition against Columbia at 7 p.m. in New York City.
