ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Tyler Roeszler scored three goals and added an assist as the Cornell men's hockey team broke open a 2-2 tie with a three-goal third period en route to a 5-2 victory over Colgate on Saturday night at Lynah Rink in Ithaca. The hat trick was the first by a Cornell player since Colin Greening did so on Feb. 28, 2008 against Dartmouth.

Erik Axell and Sean Collins added goals for the Big Red, while Greg Miller and Mike Devin both had a pair of assists. Joe Devin, Patrick Kennedy, Jordan Kary and Braden Birch each had one helper on the night as Cornell improved to 8-9-2 overall and 6-5-1 in ECAC Hockey action. Andy Iles stopped 20 shots in goal for Cornell, which went 1-for-7 on the power play on the night.

For Colgate (3-19-2, 0-10-2), Austin Smith had a pair of tallies, with Corbin McPherson, Mike Leidl, Chris Wagner and Kurtis Bartliff each adding an assist. Eric Mihalik took the loss in goal, stopping 18 shots as the Raiders went scoreless in eight power-play chances.

Smith got the Raiders on the board at the 6:24 mark of the first period, tipping home a shot from the point by McPherson, but Roeszler tied the score just over a minute later with his first tally of the night. He then gave Cornell the 2-1 lead heading into the second period with a late power-play goal in the first, slipping the puck around the outstretched leg of Mihalik at the 19:33 mark of the period.

In the second, Smith tied the score midway through the period with his second goal of the night, but Cornell came out and got a pair of goals in the third period, including the career first of Erik Axell, who shoveled home a rebound from a shot by Roeslzer in the slot at the 6:10 mark of the third. Roeszler then capped his hat trick at the 9:48 mark, with Mike Devin's point shot tipped by Kary in front, and Roeszler there to shovel in the rebound for the 4-2 lead. Collins added an extra-net tally at the 18:34 mark of the period after being sprung from his own end by Birch to cap the scoring in the contest.

Cornell returns to action on Friday, taking on Dartmouth in a 7 p.m. contest at Thompson Arena in Hanover, N.H.
