ITHACA, N.Y. – What started out promising with a 10-0 lead against the defending lead co-champions quickly got out of hand as Cornell lost 41-16 against Army at Schoellkopf Field on Friday night.

The Big Red got a 29-yard field goal by John Rodriguez and a 37-yard touchdown pass from Brendan Miller to Spenser Gruenenfelder to take a 10-point lead late in the first quarter.

But Army answered back right away, scoring the next three touchdowns to lead 21-10 early in the third quarter.

Miller, who finished the night with 334 passing yards, found Tim Bruhn for a 23-yard touchdown pass to bring the Big Red within five, but Army didn't allow another point after that.

The Black Knights responded with three consecutive touchdowns once more, and the Big Red could not catch up.

The Black Knights worked quickly, as none of their six scoring drives took more than five minutes off the clock. Two of their touchdown drives lasted less than 40 seconds. Where Army really stood out was in its rushing game, where it compiled 204 yards to Cornell's 13. Army also had three different rushers gain at least 50 yards. Cornell's leading rusher, Mike Angelo, had just 19.

The passing game was strong once again for Cornell, as Miller out-threw Army's Javier Sustatia. Sustatia came into the contest leading the CSFL in passing yards. And while he racked up 70 fewer yards than Miller at the end of the night, he had one more touchdown pass, a touchdown run and was sacked just once to Miller's five.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for Cornell, which now has to travel for the first time in more than a month. The Big Red face the league's other defending co-champion, Penn, in Philadelphia on Friday night.
