Binghamton Pulls Away From Women's Hoops For 61-48 Victory

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Viive Rebane had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Binghamton held off Cornell's second half charge en route to a 61-48 win over the Big Red on Wednesday evening at Newman Arena. Cornell slipped to 2-5 overall, while the Bearcats improved to 4-2.

Binghamton controlled the backboards in the first half to build a 15-point lead, watched the Big Red get back within three midway through the second half, then pulled away late to pick up the victory.

Rebane hit a pair of big shots in the second half on consecutive possessions, including a key 3-pointer, to extend a three-point edge to a seven-point advantage. Her trey keyed an 11-2 run that essentially put the game away.

Clare Fitzpatrick had 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots to lead Cornell, while Shelby Lyman notched 11 points. Allyson DiMagno had seven points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Cornell shot just 30 percent for the game and 19 percent (3-of-16) from beyond the arc.

Binghamton shot just 38 percent itself, but used 16 offensive rebounds to score 13 second chance points. Overall, the Bearcats held a 48-39 edge on the backboards. Jasbriell Swain chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds, while Andrea Holmes notched 10 points for BU.

Binghamton controlled the backboards (27-18) and outscored the home team 9-0 on second chance points in cruising out to a 31-21 halftime advantage. Rebane scored 10 points and had seven rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal to lead the Bearcats, while Lyman had seven to lead the Big Red. Her 3-pointer in the final minute cut the deficit to 10, giving the home team some momentum heading into the break.

The game started with both teams struggling to make a shot, but Binghamton was able to slowly pull away. After taking a 12-10 lead eight minutes into the game, Binghamton. With the game tied at 10-10, Binghamton embarked on a 15-0 run with five points apiece from Rebane and Andrea Holmes. Cornell got back to within 10 at the break to stay in the game.

Lyman brought the late 3-pointer into the second half, hitting a pair of foul-line jumpers to force a Binghamton timeout just 1:40 into the second half with the lead cut to six (31-25). Fitzpatrick's jumper on a pass from Spencer Lane got the home team within 37-34 with 10:45 to play, but Rebane quickly answered. Rebane drove around a defender for a layup to make it a five-point game. On the other end, Allie Munson went to the line and hit the second of two free throws to get back within four, but Rebane again stroked a shot from the top of the key to extend it back out to seven. Two possessions later, the lead was in double figures, and Binghamton never let Cornell back within 11 the rest of the way.
