PHILADELPHIA – In a game that saw both teams struggle on offense, the Big Red women's basketball team fell to Penn, 51-33, this evening at The Palestra. With the loss, Cornell falls to 5-16 overall and 2-5 in the Ivy League, while the Quakers improve to 8-12 on the season and 2-4 in the conference.
The Big Red, which shot just 26.7 percent from the floor and 15.4 percent from beyond the arc, was led by
Taylor Flynn and
Clare Fitzpatrick with seven and six points, respectively. Flynn added two assists, while Fitzpatrick finished with two rebounds and two steals. For the third game in a row,
Allyson DiMagno led the team in rebounds with five.
Penn was led by Jess Knapp and Alyssa Baron with 10 points apiece, while Brianna Bradford and Jerin Smith finished with eight points each. Knapp also had a game-high six rebounds as the Quakers held the slight 39-32 edge on the boards.
The Big Red turned the ball over 21 times, thanks to 10 Penn steals, while the Quakers turned the ball over just 15 times. Penn also shot marginally better on the evening, finishing at 36.5 percent from the floor and 30 percent from 3-point range.
Both teams struggled offensively in the opening moments of the game, but the Quakers managed to eventually take a 15-4 lead midway through the first half. The Big Red never really found its rhythm and the home team eventually stretched its lead to 14 points, before taking a 28-16 lead into halftime.
Penn hit five of its first nine shots in the second half to take a commanding 21 point lead with 12:58 to play in the game and held on for the 51-33 final.
Cornell will look to get back on track tomorrow night as it travels to Princeton to face the Tigers in Jadwin Gym at 6 p.m.
