ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's basketball used tough defense to hold Yale below its season-average for points and shooting percentage, but was doomed by a four-minute scoreless streak late in the second half, as the Bulldogs opened up a tied game and went on to a 57-49 victory. A late push by the Big Red, including a tough three-point play by
Allyson DiMagno with 4:20 to play, got the home team back in the game, but Cornell couldn't come all the way back.
DiMagno finished with a team-high 10 points, to go along with nine rebounds, six of which were on the offensive boards, and three assists.
Taylor Flynn also finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
Clare Fitzpatrick saw limited action due to early foul trouble but finished with eight points, five rebounds and two steals, while
Stephanie Long handed out a game-high five assists.
Yale (8-11, 4-1) was led by Mady Gobrecht with 18 points and six rebounds, while Janna Graf and Megan Vasquez chipped in 14 points apiece.
Cornell (5-14, 2-3) held the significant edge in rebounds (37-28) and shot an impressive 40 percent (19-47) from the field, while holding the Bulldogs to just 29.8 percent (14-47) overall. Yale was better from beyond the arc, finishing at 31.6 percent (6-19), while holding the Big Red to just 11.8 percent (2-17). Yale also forced 24 Cornell turnovers with 11 steals while turning the ball over just 18 times.
In the end, however, the tightly officiated game came down to foul shots, as Yale earned 23 points from the line (23-of-29), while the Big Red scored just nine points from the charity stripe (9-for-14).
Cornell took control of the game early, jumping out to a 10-3 lead at the 12:40 mark thanks to some balanced scoring and tough defense. Yale responded with a 10-2 run, thanks to seven straight points from Golbrecht, to take its first lead of the game, 15-12, with 9:47 to play.
A layup from
Maka Anyanwu ended the run and a layup from
Shelby Lyman restored the one-point lead back to the home team with 7:01 showing on the clock.
The teams battled back and forth for the final seven minutes of the half and a pair of made free throws by Flynn sent Cornell into the locker room with the 24-21 lead.
The Big Red extended its lead to eight points early in the second half, going up 29-21 thanks to a pair of buckets by
Kristina Danielak sandwiched around a single free throw from Fitzpatrick.
Yale used treys from three different players to get back into the game and took a one-point lead on a pair of free throws from Michelle Cashen. Anyanwu answered with a hard-fought layup with 11:16 to play, but that is when the Big Red's shooting went cold. The Big Red was held scoreless for 4:32 while the Bulldogs scored 10 unanswered and took a 42-33 lead with 7:14 to play.
A layup by Flynn ended the drought and the teams traded buckets until DiMagno's traditional three-point play made it a 46-41 game with 4:23 remaining. Moments later, another layup from DiMagno cut the Yale lead to four points, but Cornell could not get any closer and Yale escaped Newman Arena with the 57-49 victory.
The Big Red is back in action tomorrow as it takes on Brown at Newman Arena at 7 p.m.
