SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Big Red women's tennis team pushed instate rival Syracuse to the limit in each and every match, but could not pull out the victory as the Orange escaped with the 5-2 victory this evening at the Skytop Tennis Courts in Syracuse, N.Y. With the win, Syracuse improves to 10-2 on the season and extends its home winning-streak to 20 matches, while the Big Red fell to 6-3 overall.
“It's always disappointing to lose, but we had our chances in every match,” said
Mike Stevens, The Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis. “We were in it in every match but we just couldn't pull it out.”
The Big Red won the doubles points with victories from
Ryann Young/
Christine Ordway and
Sinziana Chis/
Ruxandra Dumitrescu. Cornell's lone single win also came from Dumitrescu, who won in a three-set tie-breaker.
Chis and
Sarah O'Neil also took the Orange to third-set tie breakers, while
Kelly Comolli fell in three sets. Both Ordway and Young fell in just two sets, but both matches were close, as the duo lost by identical scores of 7-5, 6-4.
Cornell is back in action tomorrow, Friday, March 11 as it plays host to Colgate at the Reis Tennis Center at 5:30 p.m.
