CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- No. 5 North Carolina used a seven-goal run to end the half and ran away with a 14-5 win over Cornell on Wednesday evening at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels improved to 7-2 with the win, while the Big Red slipped to 3-4.

North Carolina goalkeeper Lauren Maksym proved to be the difference, collecting 13 of the team's 15 saves to stymie an otherwise aggressive Big Red offense. Her effort allowed UNC to build on its lead methodically, with Laura Zimmerman (3 goals, 3 assists) and Becky Lynch (2 goals, 3 assists) leading the way.

Four different Big Red players scored, with Jessi Steinberg tallying a pair of goals. Kyla Dambach made seven saves against the high-powered Tar Heel offense.

Cornell opened the scoring when Katie Kirk tallied a score 6:19 into the contest, as Kyla Dambach made a pair of early saves to keep the Tar Heels off the scoreboard. After UNC tied the game at 1-1, McHugh scored just 18 seconds later to regain the advantage for Cornell with 21:24 remaining in the half. It was all UNC from there. The Tar Heels scored two goals in the next minute to take the lead, and then added five more goals to the run over the final 19 minutes to take a commanding 8-2 edge into the break. The home team held a 17-7 edge in shots and had a 12-8 edge in ground balls over the first 30 minutes.

Cornell opened the second half with a goal three minutes in to get back within five when Caroline Salisbury took a feed from Olivia Knotts and capitalized on it. The advantage, however, swung back to the home team. North Carolina extended the lead to 10 (13-3) before a Steinberg goal snapped a 5-0 Tar Heel run.

The Big Red will get a chance for another signature win when it heads to Philadelphia, Pa. to face No. 4 Penn on Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
