NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Freshman Connor Kaufmann pitched six and two-thirds innings of three-hit ball in game two of the doubleheader to give the Big Red a split on Sunday against Columbia in New York. Cornell fell in game one, 6-0, before rebounding behind Kaufmann's strong outing in game two for a 7-1 victory.

Mickey Brodsky had a strong day at the plate, going 4-for-8, scoring a pair of runs and driving in one. Frank Hager had three hits with a pair of runs and one home run with two runs driven in. Ben Swinford and Chris Cruz also had a pair of hits for the day, with both players hitting a pair of doubles.

Houston Hawley worked two and a thirds scoreless innings of relief in game two, allowing one hit. Taylor Wood took the loss in the opener, working five and a third innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts.

Cornell was blanked in the opener, only advancing a runner to second base three times in the contest. The Lions scored once in the first and the third innings, then tacked on six runs in the sixth for the final margin.

Game two opened up as a pitcher's duel as Kaufmann kept the Lions at bay through the first five innings until the Big Red offense could get on track. In the sixth, Cornell scored four times, putting together three doubles, a single and a triple to take a 4-0 lead. The Lions cut into that lead in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run, but a walk to Brian Billigen opened up the seventh. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second and Brodsky's single to left-center scored Billigen to make it 5-1. Hager then followed with a two-run blast to right center to expand the lead to 7-1, where it would finish.

Cornell returns to action on Tuesday, playing a doubleheader at Siena in Loudonville, N.Y.
