ITHACA, N.Y. -- Behind a strong outing from starter Jadd Schmeltzer in game one, the Cornell baseball team picked up a split against Penn on Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Big Red picked up a 4-2 victory in the opener before dropping a 10-2 contest, played during a steady drizzle in Ithaca.

Schmeltzer went six innings in the opener for the victory, allowing just two earned runs while striking out three and walking one. He scattered just six hits on the afternoon, and did not allow a runner beyond first base until the sixth inning. Houston Hawley worked the seventh to pick up his first career save in game one. Corey Pappel took the loss in game two, allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings of work, allowing nine hits and four walks while striking out five.

At the plate, Marshall Yanzick led the Big Red with three hits in six at-bats, also drawing a walk. Yanzick scored once and drove in one. Mickey Brodsky and Frank Hager both chipped in with a pair of RBIs on the afternoon, while both Tom D'Alessandro and Ben Swinford picked up a pair of hits.

-In the opener, Cornell (7-27, 4-10 Ivy League) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Hager's two-run single to right, scoring Yanzick and Brodsky, and the Big Red stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Brodsky hit a single to right-center, scoring D'Alessandro and Brian Billigen.

Defensively, Schmeltzer was in control until running into trouble in the sixth. He allowed three hits and a walk in the inning, but got out of trouble with runners on second and third by striking out Penn's Derek Vigoa for the third out of the inning. Hawley then came on to work the seventh and got a come-backer to the mound, a strikeout and a pop out to end the contest.

In game two, the Quakers (17-17, 8-6 Ivy) jumped out to an early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the first on back-to-back doubles and a single off of Pappel. Penn added another run in the fourth, while Penn starter Josh Cusick held the Big Red without a base hit until the fourth when Yanzick singled to right.

Penn extended the lead to 4-0 in the sixth with an unearned run, and made it 5-0 in the seventh. Cornell cut the deficit to 5-2 in the bottom half of the inning, as Swinford led off the inning with a single and moved to second on Brenton Peters' pop-up on the infield that was dropped by Vigoa. After Brandon Lee walked to load the bases, Billigen was hit by a pitch to force home Swinford, and Yanzick hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Peters.

Penn would tack on another run in the eighth, though, on a solo home run by Greg Zebrack, then scored four more in the top of the ninth to break the game open.

The two teams will meet again on Monday, playing a pair of contests at Hoy Field beginning at noon.
