POTSDAM, N.Y. – Clarkson used three power play goals in the second period to build a 4-1 advantage over No. 2 Cornell, and the homestanding Knights held on to upset the Big Red 5-3 at Cheel Arena on Saturday evening.
Down 4-1 entering the final period, Cornell got momentum-boosting goals from
Erin Barley-Maloney and
Chelsea Karpenko to cut the Clarkson lead to 4-3.
But the Big Red's game-tying goal never came as the Knights sustained its lead over the last 16 minutes of the game. Clarkson's Juana Baribeau completed her hat trick with 11.9 seconds to go, scoring on an empty net that set off a wild celebration on the Knights' bench.
Cornell (19-3, 14-2 ECAC Hockey) still holds a five-point lead in league play over Harvard, which jumped idle Quinnipiac to move into second place. Clarkson (16-7-5, 10-4-2) moved into a tie for third place with Quinnipiac.
The Big Red came into the contest after a 6-4 win at St. Lawrence the night before that saw the team take over the nation's longest unbeaten streak. But just as quickly as the team claimed that honor, it lost it.
The first period was relatively uneventful as Clarkson outshot Cornell 8-4 but neither team could get a puck in the net. The Big Red and Knights were each 0-2 on the power play during the first 20 minutes. After that, the Knights' dormant power play awoke.
Jamie Lee Rattray put one past
Lauren Slebodnick 1:37 into the second period on the power play, and Baribeau made it 2-0 less than three minutes later at even strength. At the 8:22 mark of the period, Danielle Skirrow scored for Clarkson on the power play to put the home team up 3-0.
Cornell got back into the game just two minutes later when Barley-Maloney centered a pass to
Rebecca Johnston. The senior beat Knights goalie Erica Howe for her 17th goal of the year, and that cut Clarkson's lead to 3-1.
The next goal, though, went to the Knights when
Hayleigh Cudmore took a hooking penalty and went to the box at the 16:02 mark of the period. Down a skater again, Cornell couldn't keep Baribeau from getting her second goal of the game and putting Clarkson ahead 4-1.
Cornell came roaring out of the gates at the onset of the third period, getting a goal by Barley-Maloney just 2:18 into the frame. One minute and 12 seconds later,
Chelsea Karpenko netted a goal after scrambling in front for a rebound of a
Catherine White shot.
That goal, with 16:30 left in the game, quieted the home crowd but did not deter the Knights' defense. Cornell pulled Slebodnick late but was unable to get a fourth puck past Howe.
The No. 2 Big Red will play its next weekend's games at home when it hosts Rensselaer and Union on Friday and Saturday.
