Carolyn Horner made five saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season as the Big Red field hockey team defeated Harvard, 4-0, this afternoon at Jordan Field in Cambridge. With the win, its fifth-straight, Cornell evens its record at 6-6 and improves to 3-1 in the Ivy League, moving into second-place in the conference standings.
In addition to her two goals, Balleza, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, also added an assist for a five-point day, while
Elly Plappert,
Kat DiPastina and Gennevieve Collins all registered one assist apiece.
Both teams earned six penalty corners, but Cornell held a slight edge in shots, 15-12. The Big Red also put eight of its shots on goal, while the Crimson managed to put just five on cage. Harvard goalie Cynthia Tassopoulos made four saves in the loss.
Standiford got the Big Red on the board in the 12th minute of action, scoring her first career goal off a pass from Balleza. Cornell carried the play for much of the remainder of the first half, but the teams still went into the half with the Big Red holding the slim 1-0 advantage.
Back-to-back goals by Balleza in a span of 10:10 blew open the game, putting Cornell up, 3-0 at the 52:33 mark. For her first goal, Balleza scored off a pass from Plappert when she collected the ball directly in front of the goal and beat Tassopoulos. The second goal was set up by DiPastina, who drove down the right side to the baseline, before sending a pass back to the center, where Balleza ripped a shot into the net.
Standiford capped off the game with a late goal to account for the 4-0 final. Collins assisted on the tally.
The Big Red is back in action on Monday, Oct. 15 when it welcomes Davidson to Marsha Dodson Field at 4 p.m.
